The grumpy prince and I have been bugging out to the song 'sail' by awolnation (there's an interesting story behind the name of the band). I think this song is even starting to grow on the musketeers. I haven't heard anything else by this band but they kind of remind me of NIN (nine inch nails), but less raw and industrial sounding.
Truth be told the last concert I saw was Magneta Lane and it was only because it was part of a Toronto street festival. The city of Toronto used to host these amazing themed street festivals at major downtown/uptown intersections in the city. Our intersection hosted some indie acts and kids amusement rides. I only had 2 musketeers at the time and my girl musketeer was barely walking.
On our way home we just happened to stumble into the main stage and saw them playing. I couldn't believe my luck; so there we were in the middle of the street with me singing and dancing my butt off. It was crazy cool! Their latest cd is 'Gambling with God' and if you are into girl bands that rock, you will not be disappointed.
With Canada Day around the corner I thought I'd share some awesome young Canadian musical talent with you. 'Down with Webster' and 'San Sebastian' are the ultimate in young talented musicians that are going to make tidal waves around the world. Both bands have the goods for weaving words together that play out like movies right in front of you. Each band has created their own off the charts sound that is as creative and diverse as they are. These two bands make me proud to be Canadian...rock on!!
Down with Webster recently performed at the MMVA (muchmusic video awards) in downtown Toronto.
San Sebastian showed off their talents as an unsigned band on the muchmusic show 'disBAND'; and after appearing on the show were signed to a record label.
Over the last week or so, almost every evening after dinner the entire family (yes, including the grumpy prince) spins, bumps, twists, turns and falls down to foster the peoples song 'pumped up kicks'. This indie rock band from L.A. has given us our summer of 2011 anthem song. We'll be dancing to this bands relaxed and fresh vibes for a while.
As a lover of modern dance, I would drag the prince (before he became grumpy) to see a lot of dance performances. Two of our fave dance companies were the Toronto Dance Theatre (I used to take evening dance classes there) and Dancemakers. We definitely have to make an effort to start seeing dance again.
So late last night after bailing on the hockey game we watched ' the wedge' a Muchmusic alternative video show. One of the videos we saw was by a group out of British Columbia 'Data Romance' for their song 'the deep'. The video was directed by Alistair Legrand and it's phenomenal; it certainly held our attention.
Hope you enjoy.
Have a tasteful Thursday.

P.S. I think this season of 'So You Think You Can Dance' is going to be explosive!!
The Stone Temple Pilots where do I begin...another band that my grumpy prince and I both love! I have a 4th date story (can you believe I can keep track of our dates!). My grumpy prince and I went to see the STP laser show at the planetarium and when we got there we were told that the laser was broken! To which the grumpy prince said "you better get Scotty in to fix it!"
We left and ended up at the The Duke of York (a cool pub) and sat down to banter. Half way into our convo (or 'conversation' for the non-Etsians) we realized the music in the background was STP. They continued to play STP throughout the evening, it was so wild, we couldn't stop laughing. The only thing missing was the laser but who cared!!!
Irony or fate, I took it as our fate♥
psst, at the time I thought my grumpy prince kind of looked like Scott Weiland (the lead singer), now he looks like Brett Favre "in his rookie year" (the grumpy prince made me write that, lol!)
A few weeks ago, I entitled a post of gorgeous photos 'the killing moon' and since then I've had the song in my head by Echo & the Bunnymen. I got the album 'Ocean Rain' from my mom when I graduated from grade 7. Growing up on country music, disco and top 40 radio made my home a very musically challenged environment to say the least.
The killing moon is one of my fave songs from the bunnymen and I remember thinking how cool this video was.
Hope thursday is treating you well! The temp has dropped in the city so it's very comfortable in the tower today.
Did I mention that Edward, I mean 'Robert Pattinson' is in town shooting a David Cronenberg movie? Ever since my grumpy prince mentioned it to me I've been trying not to lose my mind and escape from a tower window, screaming into the streets trying to find him, oh Edward, lol?
This month's Vogue Italia May 2011 features a swimsuit editorial photographed by Steven Meisel, starring Kristen McMenamy. A melancholy atmosphere has floated into the Hotel Chelsea and made the models a little moody. So instead of hitting the beach in their fab swim wear they're just going to wallow in it for a while.
By the way, after my grumpy prince read last weeks 'tune in thursday' post he went on a mad search for my Prentenders Greatest hits cd. It took him 2 days to find; it was putting on a performance for his geeky window's 2000 disc.
When Morcheeba first hit the music scene in 1996 they had what was termed a "trip hop" sound to their music. A very smooth, jazzy, cool beat. Over the years this trio (the Godfrey brothers: Paul & Ross and lead vocalist Skye Edwards) have gone through many changes, with both sound and lead vocals.
Skye left the band or was asked to leave in 2003 because of 'musical and personal differences'. The original trio with Edwards reformed in 2010 with a new 'album' and an extensive tour.
I really love the tune 'trigger hippie' from their first album. Skye's vocal's are so beautiful, her voice invites you to come in, chill out and enjoy the ride.
It's a rainy day in the city and I'm in heaven....I love the rain.
Have a Thunderous Thursday.
Once the 3 musketeers were banished to sleepy-land friday night, the grumpy prince and I settled into the night; reading and cruising tv channels. We stumbled on a movie called SLC Punk (1999).
SLC Punk lead into a discussion on the influence of music on teen fashion/identity and that there seems to be no more politics in music - everything looks to be mainstream these days. Our discussion was mainly that since the death of grunge, kids all appear to look and dress the same.
We walked by my old high school the other day and all the kids looked like clones. Only one kid stood out as his look was sort of modern mod. There seems to be no music genre that's influencing the kids and how they dress anymore (imagine your daughter roaming the streets dressed like Lady Gaga!). The grumpy prince thinks this might be a sign of kids knowing who they are and what they stand for and not needing to wear it on their sleeves anymore.
As a pre-teen (sorry tween), I loved punk rockers, loved the fashion and some of the music (could never get into GBH) while the grumpy prince loved\loves 70's rock.
So this might be your only chance chics and dudes if you missed out on the punk movement of the late 70's early 80's; what's old is new again, so now you can be 'mainstream punk'....now where did I put my studded belt?
over the moon, uncontrollably happy, thrilled, gobsmacked at last nights Grammy win for album of the year by the Arcade Fire. Congrats! on an amazing cd and deserving win...yah!!
this is one of my favorite songs on the cd: "the suburbs". hope you enjoy!
