RIP Adam Yauch

I was a bit surprised to hear the news yesterday about Adam Yauch's passing.
I haven't really followed the band much over the last number of years ('Intergalatic' was pretty
much when we parted ways for good).  Generally speaking I don't follow any person, band,
author, etc. as a devout fan.  So I don't really know much about the band and their members.
But I do know what I like about their music.

When the Beastie Boys first came on the scene, I was already listening to Grandmaster Flash,
Whodini and Run DMC.  Rap music for me was fresh, unique and contemporary.
Artists were experimenting at the time with styles and effects and it was a very exciting time for
music.  Most of the music I liked (pre-rap) was British rock bands that had already broken up
or died from misadventure.  I just wasn't interested in the 'British Invasion' or 'New Wave'.
Along came Rap music.

The one common denominator with all rap music at the time was they were all black artists.
It also felt like it would just always be a form of expression and style of music that
belonged to black artists.  When the Beastie Boys released 'Licensed To Ill' in 1986,
they opened the doors for everyone to rap.  Unfortunately, it was mostly a silly album.
Childish and misogynistic and generally speaking a bunch of crap (in my opinion).
I was intrigued by this group, but I wasn't impressed yet.

That all changed in 1989 with the release of 'Paul's Boutique'.
If you discard the 3:47 of 'Hey Ladies' - this was brilliant stuff!
It was funny, it had great beats and hilarious samples!
("it's a trip it's got a funky beat and I can bug out to it")
I loved that album and I loved their next release 'Check Your Head'
even more.  This album established them as real artists and I was hooked.

However, I mostly drifted apart from the 'Beasties' in the 90's.  Maybe they just hit their
peak and I didn't think it could get any better or maybe it was the re-emergence of rock
music with new acts like Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, etc.

To me the Beastie Boys, when they found their way, were
true members of what's considered to be Rap's Golden Age.

I have fond memories of their music.
So it is a sad day for me.
RIP Adam Yauch!

Tune in Thursday - Gotye

This is a cool song that the Grumpy Prince has been 'bugging out' to lately.
He suggested I use it for a Tune in Thursday.

Hope you enjoy.
 Have a Twisted Sister Thursday.

Tune in Thursday: Red Hot Chili Peppers

I used to have this song as my ringtone. But because of its low intro

I could never hear my phone and the grumpy prince would be livid because he
could never get a hold of me. So now my ringtone is some bland telephone
sound that I'm not used to and I still never get my phone...

Any hoot, love, love, love, the Chili Peppers. What an awesome
music career these lads have had and boy can they pen a mean song!!

Hope today is kind to you and you have a
tabasco Thursday!! (get it? 'tabasco' - hot - red hot) (get it yet?)
♥Lisa

Blue Monday

As today is officially 'Blue Monday'
(the 3rd Monday of January is considered to be the most depressing day of the year)
I thought I'd celebrate by playing this song by New Order.

For tips on surviving 'blue monday' read this
We took their advice and we're all playing hooky today!

Hope you all had a nice weekend.
I'm busy adding to the store almost every day, so stop by and check out the wares!

Hope your Monday isn't too blue!

Tune in Thursday - Charlotte Gainsbourg

Love the super cool look and feel of this video by Charlotte Gainsbourg. I guess what would you expect from the daughter of Jane Birkin (whom the 'birkin' bag from Hermès is named after) and Serge Gainsbourg (French singer songwriter).

Yippee, some of my supplies have arrived (Etsy suppliers, I've only had to go outside of Etsy a few times) and I'm very excited about my fall collection.  Hopefully, I'll have some new items in the shop starting next week.  My collection is going to be called 'mythologies' based on my love of Greek mythology.

See all that gold, don't worry it will be tamed by gunmetal, we are GRIMM & GRETE after all.

Hope you have a Titan Thursday!!

Prom & The Naked And Famous

Saw the movie 'Prom' last night (what?!), ok! what? who wants to take this outside!!?...lol.  Thought it was sweet, the grumpy prince is still not talking to me.  Anyhoot, really liked this song from the movie and it's not on the soundtrack, but my I.T. guy (grumpy prince) was able to find it for me, even though he's still not talking to me...lol.

We don't really have all the hype of a 'prom' we have what's called a 'formal' and there's certainly not all this crazy hoopla surrounding it and it's only for graduating students.  It's not even something that came up with me and my boyfriend at the time, that's just how understated the whole thing is.  That's why I'm always intrigued by the whole 'prom' thing and like I said it was a sweet movie.

Here it is hope you enjoy

Why don't you share your prom experience with me, was it the night of your teenage life?

Hope you have a telltale Thursday!!!

Super Tight Talent!!!

With Canada Day around the corner I thought I'd share some awesome young Canadian musical talent with you.   'Down with Webster' and 'San Sebastian' are the ultimate in young talented musicians that are going to make tidal waves around the world.  Both bands have the goods for weaving words together that play out like  movies right in front of you.  Each band has created their own off the charts sound that is as creative and diverse as they are.  These two bands make me proud to be Canadian...rock on!!

Down with Webster recently performed at the MMVA (muchmusic video awards) in downtown Toronto.

San Sebastian showed off their talents as an unsigned band on the muchmusic show 'disBAND'; and after appearing on the show were signed to a record label.

Hope you enjoy!

Have a tuneful Thursday!

tune in thursday - Foster The People

Over the last week or so, almost every evening after dinner the entire family (yes, including the grumpy prince) spins, bumps, twists, turns and falls down to foster the peoples song 'pumped up kicks'.  This indie rock band from L.A. has given us our summer of 2011 anthem song. We'll be dancing to this bands relaxed and fresh vibes for a while.

Hope you enjoy!!

Have a twisted thursday!!

Tune in Thursday - Stone Temple Pilots (stp)

The Stone Temple Pilots where do I begin...another band that my grumpy prince and I both love!  I have a 4th date story (can you believe I can keep track of our dates!).  My grumpy prince and I went to see the STP laser show at the planetarium and when we got there we were told that the laser was broken! To which the grumpy prince said "you better get Scotty in to fix it!"

We left and ended up at the The Duke of York (a cool pub) and sat down to banter.  Half way into our convo (or 'conversation' for the non-Etsians) we realized the music in the background was STP.  They continued to play STP throughout the evening, it was so wild, we couldn't stop laughing.  The only thing missing was the laser but who cared!!!

Irony or fate, I took it as our fate♥

psst,  at the time I thought my grumpy prince kind of  looked like Scott Weiland (the lead singer), now he looks like Brett Favre "in his rookie year" (the grumpy prince made me write that, lol!)

To all you love birds, have a tantric thursday ;)

Lisa
